On March 8, we celebrated International Women's Day. To follow up on this important day and continue to celebrate women, we're shining the spotlight on one of our employees who makes a positive difference at the dealership every day. It's an opportunity to celebrate her achievements, resilience and impact, while continuing to promote gender equality in the automotive industry and beyond. In that spirit, we're honored to introduce Michèle Emond, Assistant Controller at Honda Île-Perrot, who, through a short questionnaire, sheds light on her inspiring journey and unique perspectives.
1. What inspired you to pursue a career in the automotive industry?
With a secretarial and accounting diploma in my pocket, my job search turned to the Honda dealership in Île-Perrot in November 1997. A bit by chance, I must admit, as it was a friend who informed me that the dealership was looking for a receptionist. I was hired, thinking that I had to start at the bottom, since I had no experience at the time. About a year later, I was offered a position in the accounting department. From that moment on, I developed a passion for my work. I was in my element and never looked back!
2. How could the representation of women in management and leadership positions benefit the automotive industry as a whole?
I'd say without a doubt that women's attention to detail, resourcefulness, determination and adaptability in all kinds of professional situations make them a distinct asset in the automotive field, which was traditionally male-dominated until not so long ago. My male colleagues themselves recognize that women are an important addition to the company. They bring a different way of seeing things, and their creativity is an added value. They also have an ability to solve problems with empathy.
3. Can you share a memorable success or achievement you've achieved in your career in the automotive industry?
I'd just say that I sincerely believe I've been able to carve out a place of trust with my team. I'm proud to say that I've spent half my life with the same company. The feeling of a job well done when objectives are achieved is a great source of satisfaction. My colleagues know they can count on me, and I think that's a great personal and professional achievement.
4. What advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter the automotive industry?
I'd tell them to go for it. They'll find a motivating work environment with plenty of career opportunities.
5. What changes or advances do you foresee in the future of the automotive industry, particularly as regards the role of women?
Women are still under-represented, especially in decision-making roles, but studies show that companies that embrace diversity perform better. The field is changing, and everyone benefits. We need to encourage female ambition!
