Comparison of the 2020 Honda Civic vs the 2020 Toyota Corolla at Honda ile-Perrot near Vaudreuil

2020 Honda Civic VS 2020 Toyota Corolla

In 2020, the sleek and sporty Honda Civic is designed for the real world. Rethought and reorganized inside and out, this edgy vehicle is now intended for driving performance, but it can go far beyond that. It is flexible and changeable to suit your needs and easily adapts to be what you want it to be. As for the 2020 Toyota Corolla, like the Honda Civic, it's a versatile car that's been on the market since 1966. It looks good on the road while being economical and very user-friendly and, since last year, it has a new exterior look.

While it's hard to tell who the winner is between these two Japanese compacts, which are so similar and competitive, the Honda Civic continues to grow in popularity in Canada with record sales in recent years. Honda Île Perrot, a Honda dealership on the West Island of Montreal near Valleyfield, reveals what distinguishes the Honda Civic from the Toyota Corolla in 2020 and why we should ultimately drive a Honda Civic rather than a Toyota Corolla.

Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla?

The Toyota Corolla was introduced in 1966 and the Honda Civic in 1972. Both have a long history, and while the Toyota Corolla remains the world's best-selling car in 2018, the Honda Civic is gaining popularity in Canada every year, with 69,000 Canadians choosing it in 2018, creating a gap of nearly 20,000 units sold with its closest rival, the Toyota Corolla.

In 2020, Honda will offer consumers an even greater variety of Honda Civic models, starting with the sedan (DX, LX, EX and Sport), the Touring sedan, the Coupe (Touring) and the Civic Hatchback (LX Auto) to the SI Sedan and SI Coupe, the sporty and flamboyant Honda Type R and the Honda Civic Hatchback (LX Man, Sport, Sport Touring). The Corolla has 4-door, 5-seat sedan models (L, LE, SE, XLE, XSE, E Hybrid) as well as the Corolla HB 5-door, 5-seat hatchback.

This first comparison shows more variety with Honda than with Toyota, which is nonetheless presenting a hybrid version of its legendary model. The winner: the Honda Civic.

Under the hood, the 2020 Toyota Corolla first unveils a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain, then a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine with 139 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque, and finally a 4-cylinder engine with 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. The 2020 Civic offers a wide range of powertrains, including a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque, a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 174 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 205 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque, and for the Type R, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Therefore the winner is the Honda Civic.

Honda has enhanced the aesthetics of some of its Civic models, while Toyota introduced a new Corolla generation in 2019. Both interiors are user friendly and have innovative features and functionalities, except that Honda offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity while Toyota only offers Apple CarPlay. The space is generous, the comfort is there in both compact cars and the rear legroom seems to be equivalent. It's hard to pick a winner, but due to a few more features and Honda's revised interior design, we're leaning toward this one. Finally, both vehicles offer undeniably great safety features. One is the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, the other the latest generation of Honda Sensing.
